ACCRINGTON RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB

MATCH REPORT:

Accrington continued their fine start to the season, making it 3 wins out of 3 in this, their first home game this season. New Cumbrian signing Danny Loudon , was the first to cross the line , following a kick through and with Andy Watson converting to take an early 6 - 0 lead.

Defensive errors and the concession of a penalty close to their own line then allowed Orrell to take the lead with two quick tries, both conversions missed to give a 6 – 8 score line.

The main feature of Accrington's first half play was the quality of their kick and chase game, which kept the opposition in their own half for long periods, a scrum was won from one such chase and when stand off Dave Makin got the ball he produced an excellent piece of individual play to score the try of the match to make the score 10 – 8.

The lead again changed hands with Orrell again taking advantage of a lapse in concentration by the home side to make the score 10 – 12.

As half time approached Accrington were forced to defend their own line , but the young Makin poached a classic interception try and ran almost the full length to score under the posts Watson converting . Half time score Accrington 16 Orrell 12.

Accrington had used a good rotation system with their prop forwards during the first half hill slog. So with the fresh legs of Ray Grace and Axel Foley together with Kieran Bellis and Joe Swaitzak, playing down the field Accrington managed to get a strong go forward roll. This had the effect and soon tired the oppositions defensive line, with captain Nick Cook following a neat kick which came back off the post for him to gather and score the second half dominance began. 22 – 12.

Moments after Orrell had again closed the gap to 22 – 18 poacher Makin was at it again, getting into their line to snatch another lengthy interception try for his first hat-trick. 26 – 18.

Victory was secured in the closing stages with hard working centre, Jules Rickles crossing the line.

Final score Accrington 34 Orrell St James 22.

Accrington are reaping the rewards this year of a tremendous pre-season training programme, which has got them playing some of the most entertaining rugby for many years, lets hope it continues.

Next week they travel to Golborne Parkside.
